In October 2020, during the pandemic, my family and I managed to sneak in a little week long break to Corfu right before the second lockdown. Having had every other trip cancelled or postponed during 2020, getting away in October was incredibly good for my mental health and that of my family.
These are a handful of the highlights from that trip
The Sunsets
By the time we had got through the airport, travelled on the coach and checked in at the hotel (we usually self-drive so this was our first experience of checking in with 2 coach loads of other arrivals), we were finally able to go and say hi to the sea!
We headed down as quickly as we could, and shortly after arriving we were treated to the most incredible sunset I have ever seen and for every other evening of the holiday we saw consistently spectacular sunsets! Honestly breath taking with a horizon that never seemed to end!
Paxos and Antipaxos Boat Trip
Recommended by my step-daughter who had visited Corfu before, we booked a Paxos and Antipaxos boat trip to visit the “Diamonds of the Ionian Sea”.
We were collected from our hotel and taken to the boat. Onboard we had to wear our face masks and despite the trip being full, there was plenty of room onboard. In normal times, they offer drinks and refreshments and there is a toilet on board.
We cruised along the coastline of Corfu heading towards the island of Paxos island and our first stop; Lakka, a beautiful fishing village. The boat then entered the biggest caves of Odysseus and we were treated to spectacular views of the caves, grottos, monoliths and huge cliffs! Absolutely stunning.
The next stop was Antipaxos and an absolutely breath taking beach with crystal clear turquoise waters and white sand for swimming and snorkelling. We had some time here to swim which we gladly took. We were able to change into and out of our swimming clothes in the toilet on the boat and had an incredible time.
After our swim, we returned to the calm East coast of Paxos and headed to the charming village of Gaios, we had a lovely walk around the village with its typical tavernas, shops and narrow streets. We found a lovely restaurant and sat out in the sunshine enjoying a beer some traditional Greek food before heading back to the boat and towards our hotel.
We booked our trip to with Messonghi Travel who were fantastic from booking right through to taking us back to the hotel. We loved our captain who also gave us lots of information about the places we were visiting. The trip lasted about 3 hours.
Old Fortress, Corfu Town
We headed to Corfu Town on a coach trip with Messonghi Travel. Our intention was to see the Old Fortress and have a wander around the town. However, we were go enchanted by the Old Fortress and the views that we ended up spending the whole of our time at the fortress!
The coach picked us up from our hotel and then dropped us right by the Old Fortress. There is a charge for entry which was about 6 Euros each. We wandered aimlessly and took photos, enjoying the views as we went. There was a café/restaurant and we stopped and had a cold drink. The views were beautiful and it was so very quiet. For most of the time we were alone! I can only assume it was due to the time of year and of course the Covid-19 situation, but we really appreciated this peace and quiet to enjoy our time
As we climbed higher the views became even more immense. There was a chap playing saxophone beneath us at one point which was lovely to listen to.
When we reached the top, we of course had to do some silly photos and take in the panoramic views. We were there quite some time before another family arrived!
On the way back down, we enjoyed another drink at the café before joining back up with the coach to take us back to our hotel.
Just a beautiful, fun day. Stunning weather and stunning views - just wish the time had been more generous so that we could have also sneaked in a wander around the Corfu Town streets - next time for sure!
Time with my family making memories
Probably the best thing about our trip was the fabulous memories we made together. Holidays really do give you a chance to spend some quality time with those that you love and to experience new things with them. After such a long time of lockdown and seeing each other very little throughout the year (my husbands children don't live with us), this holiday was absolutely needed and thoroughly enjoyed!
